Toronto woman goes viral after hosting free buffet for passengers on the TTC
A Toronto woman is going viral for giving a whole new meaning to “fast food.”
Izzy Petraglia, a freelance writer and publicist, turned a TTC subway commute into an extraordinary act of generosity and community building by hosting a free buffet for passengers on Monday.
Petraglia brought her passion project to life when she and a few friends set up a full buffet table aboard a Line 1 subway train at around 7 p.m.
Inspired by a viral New York City subway Thanksgiving dinner video she saw months ago, Petraglia said she had long dreamed of recreating something similar, ahead of launching her own cookbook.
“I saw the video and thought, ‘That would be cool to do one day.’ A few weeks ago, I finally said, ‘You know what? I’m going to do it,’” she told Global News.
Petraglia said she prepared all the food herself the day of, serving a variety of dishes and treats, including spicy miso cucumber salad, pancit bihon, sweet and spicy tofu, noodles and cookies.
“The ube white chocolate cookies were by far the biggest hit,” she said.

The culinary journey began at Glencairn Station and ran up to Finch and back down again, lasting nearly two hours.

Along the way, curious passengers began to take notice and participate in the feast.
“At first, people were just laughing or taking photos,” Petraglia said. “But then some came up to grab plates.”
“One woman had just worked a 12-hour shift and told us she could cry from how hungry she was. That meant a lot to me, and when I realized that’s why I did it.”
A handwritten flyer listing all ingredients was handed out with each plate, ensuring passengers with allergies had full transparency.
While Petraglia did receive some backlash online over hygiene concerns, she said her team made hygiene a top priority, regularly sanitizing and serving the food themselves rather than letting people self-serve.
“I was careful, we sanitized, we listed all allergens, served people, and we did it as safely as possible,” she told Global News.
The subway feast wasn’t just a one-off stunt, according to Petraglia, who plans to do another one in a few months. “I love gathering people over food,” she said. “Everyone on the TTC is in their own little world. I wanted to get people out of that and talking to one another.”

In the meantime, Petraglia is continuing to develop her cookbook, bake for friends and dream up new ways to connect with her city, one plate at a time.
Amid rising inflation, a worsening housing crisis, and growing food insecurity in Toronto, Petraglia said she’s grateful her initiative could provide a warm meal and a moment of connection to those who needed it.
“Food is how we connect, it always has been,” Petraglia said.

A Bancroft, Ont., man is facing dozens of charges related to child exploitation following an online investigation involving multiple OPP departments.
Police say search warrants were executed at residences in Bancroft and Phelpston, and that several electronic devices were seized.
A 51-year-old from Bancroft was arrested and charged with nine counts of luring a person under the age of 16, one count of luring a person under the age of 18, six counts of making child pornography available, and seven counts of making sexually explicit material available to a person under 16.

“The responsibility of protecting our children in today’s digital age cannot be overstated. I encourage every member of our community to stay informed about the online risks young people face,” says OPP Det. Staff Sgt. Chris Barkey.
“Parents, in particular, play a crucial role — engage in open conversations with your children, establish clear boundaries and make use of available resources to help ensure their safety online,” Barkey said.
The accused remains in custody following a bail hearing and is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Belleville on Thursday.
Provincial police say they will continue to identify and pursue individuals who use technology to exploit children.
Police are urging parents to take a proactive approach to help protect their children from online sexual exploitation by speaking with them about internet safety. Parents can find resources to assist them at cybertip.ca or protectchildren.ca.

A London man has been arrested after attacking a person out for a walk with their dog and stealing the furry friend.
The London Police Service responded to a robbery in the south end of the city over the weekend.
Shortly before 10:40 p.m. on July 27, police say a man walking his dog in the area of Base Line Road West and Cotswold Gate was approached by an unknown male.

The suspect male reportedly told the man to give him his dog and the two became involved in an argument.
Police say the suspect brandished a pair of pliers and struck the victim several times before taking the dog and fleeing on foot.
A citizen in the area called 911 and described the suspect to police.
Officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect a short distance away without the dog.
The victim sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by paramedic services.
The dog was later found at the suspect’s home and was reunited with the victim.
As a result of the investigation, a 30-year-old London man has been charged with one count of robbery.
The accused appeared in court on Wednesday.

A northeastern Ontario region that saw its first measles infection this summer is now reporting dozens of new cases.
Public Health Ontario is reporting 40 new cases in the Sudbury area’s public health unit, which also covers Chapleau and Manitoulin Island.
That accounts for most of the province’s 54 new cases for the week of July 22 to 29, and brings the total number to 2,352 since an outbreak began in October.

On July 22, the Sudbury public health unit reported its first case of measles since 2014 in an infant too young to be vaccinated against the highly contagious disease.
Last Friday, the public health unit said its investigation into that first case led to discovering that measles was actually introduced to the area seven weeks earlier and infected a cluster of 39 people.
The previously undetected cluster of measles cases was linked to several private gatherings, and led to exposures at public locations.
Health officials say the majority of the infections reported the previous week have resolved.
Dr. M. Mustafa Hirji, the region’s acting medical officer of health, said in a statement last week that local cases are predominantly in unvaccinated individuals.
