Police recover body of man who drowned trying to rescue woman in Ottawa River

Police in Les Collines-de-l’Outaouais, Que., say divers have recovered the body of a man who drowned after attempting to save a woman who was in distress in the Ottawa River over the weekend.
Police say the 53-year-old man jumped off a pontoon to rescue the woman who was floundering near Mohr Island, which lies in the middle of the waterway, almost directly on the border between Ontario and Quebec, about an hour’s drive from the Ottawa-Gatineau area.
Police say the man, who hails from Pontiac, Que., was not wearing a safety vest as he sank below the water.
The woman was rescued by another man, according to media reports.

After the man disappeared in the water, police say firefighters and boaters from both sides of the border sprang into action and began to search for him.

On Monday, police said the Ottawa Police Nautical Squad had criss-crossed the area for much of the night but had failed to find the missing man.
Officers from MRC des Collines and the Sûreté du Québec continued the search on Tuesday before SQ divers found the man’s body at around 12:45 p.m.
They say it took the divers about an hour to bring his body to shore and confirm his identity.
Police say the death is currently believed to be accidental, but they are waiting for the result of a coroner’s autopsy.

The suspect male reportedly told the man to give him his dog and the two became involved in an argument.
Police say the suspect brandished a pair of pliers and struck the victim several times before taking the dog and fleeing on foot.
A citizen in the area called 911 and described the suspect to police.
Officers were able to locate and arrest the suspect a short distance away without the dog.
The victim sustained serious non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to hospital by paramedic services.
The dog was later found at the suspect’s home and was reunited with the victim.
As a result of the investigation, a 30-year-old London man has been charged with one count of robbery.
The accused appeared in court on Wednesday.

Cluster of new Ontario measles cases mostly in the Sudbury area

A northeastern Ontario region that saw its first measles infection this summer is now reporting dozens of new cases.
Public Health Ontario is reporting 40 new cases in the Sudbury area’s public health unit, which also covers Chapleau and Manitoulin Island.
That accounts for most of the province’s 54 new cases for the week of July 22 to 29, and brings the total number to 2,352 since an outbreak began in October.

On July 22, the Sudbury public health unit reported its first case of measles since 2014 in an infant too young to be vaccinated against the highly contagious disease.
Last Friday, the public health unit said its investigation into that first case led to discovering that measles was actually introduced to the area seven weeks earlier and infected a cluster of 39 people.
The previously undetected cluster of measles cases was linked to several private gatherings, and led to exposures at public locations.
Health officials say the majority of the infections reported the previous week have resolved.
Dr. M. Mustafa Hirji, the region’s acting medical officer of health, said in a statement last week that local cases are predominantly in unvaccinated individuals.

‘Opportunistic theft’: Hamilton police charge woman in theft from Good Samaritan

Hamilton police have arrested a woman in connection with a theft that occurred during the chaotic aftermath of a fatal shooting in the city’s downtown core earlier this month.
According to a police news release, on July 11, 26-year-old Belinda Sarkodie was fatally shot in broad daylight near King Street East and James Street North.
As police and members of the public rushed to help, one Good Samaritan, who had stepped in to assist Sarkodie, became the victim of an “opportunistic theft,” the statement read.

Police say the individual’s purse, containing ID, bank cards and other valuables, was stolen from the scene.
After reviewing surveillance footage, analyzing bank activity and conducting interviews, investigators identified the suspect as a 35-year-old female from Hamilton.
The individual has been charged with theft, fraud, possession of stolen property, use and possession of credit cards and failing to comply with probation.
She was arrested without incident and remains in custody. Police say the incident highlights the contrast between the compassion shown by citizens during a crisis and those who choose to take advantage.
They thanked the individuals who assisted Sarkodie during the initial shooting and said the investigation is still ongoing.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police or submit an anonymous tip through Crime Stoppers.
